Swiss Hostage Kills Guard And Flees Militants

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 06 Desember 2014 | 20.18

A Swiss wildlife photographer captured by Islamist rebels in the Philippines over two years ago has escaped after killing his guard with a machete.

Members of the Abu Sayyaf group kidnapped Lorenzo Vinciguerra, 49, in the southern Philippines more than two years ago.

But Colonel Allan Arrojado, commander of the army's Joint Task Group on the island of Sulu, said he made a break for freedom during fighting between his captors and the Philippines military.

The Swiss man was wounded on his left cheek as he wrestled for the machete, finally getting hold of it and slashing the guard on the neck, Mr Arrojado said.

"He dashed while other bandits were shooting at him," he added.

Mr Vinciguerra was being held with Dutch national Elwold Horn, 52, and shouted at him to run but the Dutch man had been "very sick and very weak" and was unable to escape, Mr Arrojado said, adding there was no word on Mr Horn's whereabouts.

Speaking from a military hospital Mr Vinciguerra said he was happy that he would be able to spend Christmas with his family.

He added that he felt the extremists would treat Mr Horn well and urged the militants to surrender and start a new life.

"My final message to everybody: Put the gun down and come out from the forest," he told a reporter. "It's a nice life out here."

The military said five militants were killed and seven wounded in the firefight.

The two European wildlife photographers were captured in Tawi-Tawi province as they were sailing on a birdwatching trip in February 2012.

The Abu Sayyaf is holding several other foreign and Filipino hostages.

The military launched an offensive against the group in October after rebels released two German nationals they seized in April.

The Abu Sayyaf are the most notorious of several rebels factions in the Muslim south of the largely Christian Philippines.

Hostages Killed By Captors During Rescue

US photojournalist Luke Somers and South Africa teacher Pierre Korkie have been killed during a rescue attempt by US and Yemeni forces.

The pair were murdered by their Al Qaeda captors - 10 of whom were also killed - during the raid in the Shabwah region of Yemen, the US said.

There are reports the South African hostage was due to be released tomorrow - but President Barack Obama authorised the raid because information "indicated that Luke's life was in imminent danger".

"Based on this assessment, and as soon as there was reliable intelligence and an operational plan, I authorised a rescue attempt," Mr Obama said.

"I also authorised the rescue of any other hostages held in the same location as Luke."

Yemen's national security chief, Ali al-Ahmadi, said the militants planned to "execute" Mr Somers - who was born in Britain - on Saturday.

The death of Mr Korkie was confirmed by the disaster relief group Gift of the Givers.

"The psychological and emotional devastation to [his wife] Yolande and her family will be compounded by the knowledge that Pierre was to be released by Al Qaeda tomorrow," the organisation said.

"It is even more tragic that the words we used in a conversation with Yolande at 5.59 this morning was 'the wait is almost over'.

"Three days ago we told her Pierre will be home for Christmas."

Mr and Mrs Korkie were taken hostage by Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) in May 2013 - though Yolande was released at the start of this year.

Mr Somers, meanwhile, was captured in September last year.

Militants released a video on Wednesday threatening to kill him within three days if their demands were not met.

The 33-year-old appeared in the footage saying he feared for his life.

Following the rescue attempt US troops took Mr Somers to a naval ship but he was reportedly dead upon arrival.

His sister, Lucy Somers, has asked that "all of Luke's family members be allowed to mourn in peace".

Ms Somers had posted a YouTube video pleading for her brother's release just hours before his death.

The raid was the second attempt to free Mr Somers.

Mr Obama condemned his murder as "barbaric".

"Luke was a photojournalist who sought through his images to convey the lives of Yemenis to the outside world," he said.

"The callous disregard for Luke's life is more proof of the depths of AQAP's depravity, and further reason why the world must never cease in seeking to defeat their evil ideology."

News of the failed rescue comes after a suspected US drone strike killed nine alleged Al Qaeda militants in Shabwah overnight.

Families 'Confident' In Thai Murder Inquiry

The families of two young Britons murdered in Thailand say they are "confident" in the work being carried out to solve the "atrocious crimes".

Students David Miller, 24, from Jersey, and 23-year-old Hannah Witheridge, from Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, were found dead on a beach on the holiday island of Ko Tao in September.

Two Burmese bar workers are accused of the murders, but claim they were tortured by the Thai police to secure a confession.

Amnesty International has called for an investigation into the allegations.

The families of Mr Miller and Ms Witheridge have issued statements thanking Metropolitan Police detectives for reviewing the case, and calling for the investigation to be allowed to take its course.

Ms Witheridge's family said: "We would like to thank the officers who travelled to Thailand to review the case and the Royal Thai Police for facilitating their visit."

They added: "We would like to stress that as a family we are confident in the work that has been carried out into these atrocious crimes and want to remind both press and public that they do not have the full facts to report and make comment on at this stage.

"Our thoughts, as always, are with the Miller family. Together we stand united and focused on seeing a fair and transparent trial process to bring about justice for our beautiful children."

Mr Miller's family said: "We would like to express our relief that progress is being made in Thailand and this case is finally coming to court.

"We would like to reiterate our gratitude to the UK Metropolitan Police, who received the co-operation of the Royal Thai Police in undertaking an independent review into the investigation."

And while "support for the Myanmar suspects has been strong and vocal" they urged the public not to "jump to conclusions" and said the "suspects have a difficult case to answer".

They added: "The evidence against them appears to be powerful and convincing. They must respond to these charges, and their arguments must be considered with the same scrutiny as those of the prosecution.

"Please remember that this is above all a story of two wonderful young people, David and Hannah, killed in the prime of their lives in a senseless and brutal way."

Women Claim Discrimination Over World Cup Turf

A legal challenge by players who say staging the Women's World Cup on artificial grass is discriminatory threatens to overshadow the draw for the tournament's group stage this evening.

FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke has described the claim as "a nonsense" as the teams competing in Canada 2015 await their fate.

The lawsuit against FIFA and the Canadian Soccer Association has been filed by players, including American star forward Abby Wambach.

It cites gender discrimination - pointing out that every men's World Cup has been played on grass.

But speaking at a news conference in Ottawa, Mr Valcke said: "I'm amazed by the size, or the scale, of the discussion and where we are when it's about artificial pitches.

"Why? Because we have decided at FIFA - and it's part of our statutes and regulations - that artificial pitches can be used as natural grass to make sure we can play football everywhere around the world.

"If anyone is saying the use of the artificial pitch is a question of discrimination, it's a nonsense.

"It's completely crazy to say that. It has nothing to do with discrimination."

Mr Valcke said FIFA was "working every day to develop women's football around the world" - but that artificial pitches were commonplace in Canada.

He added that tournament prize money would increase to $15m (£9.6m) - a 50% rise from the 2011 tournament.

The prize pot for the 2014 men's World Cup was $576m (£370m).

The lawsuit has been filed under Ontario's Human Rights Code.

FIFA has come under attack in recent months over the bidding process for the men's World Cups in 2018 and 2022, won by Russia and Qatar respectively.

Both countries, along with England, have been accused of breaking FIFA rules.

'Day One Of Mars Era': Orion Blasts Off

'Day One Of Mars Era': Orion Blasts Off

We use cookies to give you the best experience. If you do nothing we'll assume that it's ok.

NASA has successfully launched its new Orion spacecraft into orbit at the second attempt, after high winds and rocket problems delayed the first launch bid.

The unmanned four-hour flight will test crucial systems, like the heat shield and parachute splashdown, on a spacecraft that could one day take humans to an asteroid, the Moon or Mars.

It is the first launch in more than 40 years of a US spacecraft intended to carry humans beyond the Moon.

Orion blasted off aboard a United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy rocket at just after 7am local time (12pm UK time) from Cape Canaveral in Florida.

The 24-storey-tall rocket soared out over the Atlantic Ocean, punching through partly cloudy skies as it headed into orbit.

Cars packed roads for miles around the launch site as thousands tried to catch a glimpse of the event.

"I think it's a big day for the world, for people who know and like space," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said in a NASA Television interview before the launch.

"Everything may not go right, but everything that does go right means that we've bought down one more risk on this vehicle."

He called the launch "day one of the Mars era".

Orion will orbit the world twice on its inaugural flight and will shoot for a high point of 3,600 miles, farther than any spacecraft built for humans has gone since the Apollo moon programme.

The spacecraft will then plunge into the waters off San Diego, California, to be retrieved by the US Navy.

Sensors on the capsule should tell NASA if the temperatures inside were survivable for a potential crew, even as the spacecraft itself heated to 2,200 Celsius (4,000 degrees Fahrenheit) during re-entry to the Earth's atmosphere at a velocity of 20,000mph.

About $370m (£235m) worth of equipment is at stake in the launch.

NASA has spent $9.1bn (£5.8bn) on Orion and the Space Launch System, which is meant to propel it with a crew on board.

A second unmanned test flight is due in 2018.

The first test flight with people on board is scheduled for 2021, when total costs are projected to reach $19-22bn (£12-£14bn).

A journey to Mars could take place by the 2030s.

Typhoon 'Smash': 150mph Winds To Hit Philippines

Typhoon 'Smash': 150mph Winds To Hit Philippines

We use cookies to give you the best experience. If you do nothing we'll assume that it's ok.

A powerful storm with winds nearing 150mph is heading for the central Philippines, prompting an outbreak of panic-buying as villagers flee coastal homes.

The anticipated arrival in Eastern Samar province on Saturday of Typhoon Hagupit - Filipino for "smash" - comes a year after Typhoon Haiyan left more than 7,300 dead as it swept inland along the same route.

Meteorologists tracking it over the Pacific, 435 miles off the country's eastern coast, say it has sustained winds of 127mph and gusts as high as 149mph.

Haiyan survivor Emily Sagales said many of her neighbours in central Tacloban city, which was ravaged by Haiyan, had packed their clothes and fled to a sports stadium and safer homes of relatives.

She said long queues had formed at food stores and petrol stations as residents stocked up on basic goods.

The 23-year-old, who saw her mother-in-law killed and her home washed away in Haiayan, gave birth to her first child in a crowded makeshift clinic following the disaster.

"The trauma has returned," she said.

Hamas: Loss Of Hope Behind Jerusalem Violence

By Tom Rayner, Middle East Reporter

The leader of Hamas has claimed rising violence in Jerusalem is the result of Palestinians having lost hope of any "just solution" to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In an exclusive interview from his base in Qatar, Khalid Meshaal said the recent deadly attacks against Israelis were the fault of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "playing with fire" by allowing right-wing activists to enter the Al Aqsa Mosque compound.

Mr Meshaal warned it could lead to "chaos in the region".

Israel has repeatedly accused Hamas of being behind attacks on civilians, and said Palestinian leaders were inciting violence by misrepresenting its policies regarding the sacred area, known to Jews as Temple Mount.

Hamas, deemed a terrorist organisation by EU governments and the US, has not claimed responsibility for the attacks - but Mr Meshaal refused to condemn them.

"The Palestinian people no longer have anything to lose in light of the continuation of the occupation and settlements, stealing the land, the attacks on the women and children and the Holy sites," he said.

"The reaction is spontaneous …The Israeli stubbornness, combined with the international impotence in solving the Palestinian issue with a just solution, which gives the Palestinian people their self-determination, and gets rid of occupation … will lead to chaos in the region, not just in the Palestinian arena, but to an open conflict - a bloodbath."

He added: "We warn against keeping the Palestinian issue with no solution and stripping the Palestinian people of hope.

"Those betting on a security solution for stopping the resistance, by hunting its leadership and blocking weapons coming to its fighters, through the security cooperation of the Palestinian Authority with the Israelis, with regional and international cooperation - all of this has proven useless.

"Because when public anger reaches its limit it explodes on its own, and expresses itself in ways that surprises everyone."

Read the full transcript of the Sky News interview with Khalid Meshaal

Mr Meshaal, who leads the political wing of the group, said Hamas remained committed to reconciliation with President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah party.

He described it as a "national necessity" despite the apparent deterioration of relations following bombings targeting the property of Fatah officials in Gaza.

He also claimed Hamas was committed to the goal of a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders - a position Mr Meshaal said was enshrined in Palestinian reconciliation agreements signed with Fatah and other factions - but that it would remain committed to "armed-resistance" until it was achieved.

'Black Widow': Cyanide Found In Pot Plants

Japanese police investigating a so-called Black Widow" and the deaths of her six partners say they have found traces of cyanide in soil from her pot plants, according to news reports.

Chisako Kakehi, 68, was arrested last month on suspicion of murdering her 75-year-old husband.

She had received one billion yen (£5.4m) in insurance and other payouts over 10 years following the deaths of husbands and lovers.

Police believe she killed Isao Kakehi - her fourth and most recent husband - with cyanide in December last year.

The couple had only been married a month.

Investigators, who tested plant pots she took to a recycling centre about six months after her husband died, found a bag at the bottom of a plant box.

Lab results showed the presence of cyanide compounds, Kyodo News and other media reported.

Since the death from illness of her first husband in 1994, Kakehi had reportedly been involved with more than 10 men, of whom six had perished.

Reports say that most were elderly or ill and she was deliberately targeting unattached wealthy men as part of a plan to get insurance payouts or to inherit their assets.

Kakehi has denied murder.

Cyanide was found in the body of at least one of the men she was involved with before her recent marriage.

An earlier police raid on her home in Kyoto found traces of cyanide in the rubbish, media said.

They also found paraphernalia for administering drugs and medical books at an apartment she kept south of Kyoto.

Test Run For Spaceship Taking Humans To Mars

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 04 Desember 2014 | 20.18

By Thomas Moore, Science And Health Correspondent

A US spaceship designed to take astronauts to an asteroid and then Mars is due to blast off for its debut test flight later today.

The unmanned version of NASA's Orion capsule should lift off from Cape Canaveral in Florida at 12.05pm UK time.

A Delta IV Heavy rocket will power the capsule to a height of 3,600 miles, 15 times higher than the space station, before turning round to re-enter the atmosphere at 20,000mph.

Mark Geyer, program manager of Orion, said: "Really, we're going to test the riskiest parts of the mission.

"Ascent, entry, plus the navigation and guidance - all those things are going to be tested."

Al Qaeda Threatens To Murder Photojournalist

Al Qaeda has threatened to murder a British-born American citizen it captured in Yemen over a year ago.

Photojournalist Luke Somers, who was born in England but has lived in the US for most of his life, was captured by the Islamic extremist group in Sana'a in September 2013.

The Arabian Peninsula wing of the group (AQAP) has released a video with a message saying it will kill the hostage if its demands are not met.

The video has been obtained but not released by US security monitoring organisation SITE Intelligence Group.

The three-minute video first shows Nasser bin Ali al Ansi, a local al Qaeda official, speaking about alleged American crimes against the Muslim world and saying the US is "aware" of the militants' demands.

Speaking in Arabic, Mr Ansi says the US has three days to meet the demands or "otherwise, the American hostage held by us will meet his inevitable fate".

Later in the video, Mr Somers says: "My name is Luke Somers. I'm 33 years old. I was born in England, but I carry American citizenship and have lived in America for most of my life.

"It's now been well over a year since I've been kidnapped in Sana'a. Basically, I'm looking for any help that can get me out of this situation. I'm certain that my life is in danger.

"So as I sit here now, I ask if anything can be done, please let it be done. Thank you very much."

AQAP is considered the most dangerous affiliate of al Qaeda by Washington.

Last week, a Yemeni government website said in a statement the group had moved a number of hostages including an American journalist, as well as a Briton and a South African, days before a joint US-Yemeni raid in southeastern Hadramawt province to free one of them.

It is not clear whether Mr Somers is the journalist or the Briton the statement was referring to.

He was in Sana'a to work as a photojournalist for the Yemen Times.

Yemen is an ally of the US in the fight against al Qaeda, with drones operating against the group over its territory.

Putin: Enemies Seek Russia's Downfall

Vladimir Putin says Russia's "enemies of the past" are seeking to carve up his country like Yugoslavia.

In his annual State of the Nation speech the Russian President criticised sanctions imposed by the West, saying they are an attempt to undermine Russia.

He said:  "There is no doubt they would have loved to see the Yugoslavia scenario of collapse and dismemberment for us - with all the tragic consequences it would have for the peoples of Russia. This has not happened. We did not allow it."

He pledged not to sever ties with Europe but said: "We are ready to meet any challenge of the times and win."

Mr Putin has faced fierce criticism from the international community over Russia's role in the crisis in Ukraine.

Sydney Police Accused Of Brutality Over Video

Sydney Police have defended their officers against accusations of brutality after a video went viral showing a woman being held down and struck with batons as she was arrested.

The woman was one of four people held for the alleged assault of a taxi driver and female police officer at 1.45am on Wednesday morning.

A bystander recorded the video on a mobile phone. In it, voices can be heard shouting: "She's not resisting arrest."

The woman being arrested is model Claire Helen who encouraged people to share the video on social media.

Police say one member of her group had punched the taxi driver over an argument about the fare. The taxi driver then flagged down a passing police car and an altercation with the officer began.

Superintendent Michael Fitzgerald says the video only tells part the story and CCTV shows Ms Helen punching a female officer in the mouth before the arrest.

He added: "Police are not punching bags. Neither are taxi drivers."

Ms Helen and the three men who were also arrested have been granted bail and will appear in court on 6 January.

Iran's Involvement Makes US Role More Awkward

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 03 Desember 2014 | 20.18

In the fog of war we should not be surprised by smoke and mirrors. Especially not when it comes to Iran.

Tehran has denied it. Baghdad says it 'knows nothing of it'. But it's been filmed and the Americans have, more or less, confirmed it in Sphinx-like terms.

Iran has been bombing Islamic State inside Iraq.

That's awkward. Awkward for Washington, which insists the air strikes are not coordinated with its forces who are also on operations in the same battle space.

Awkward for Tehran, where appearing to be on the same side as 'The Great Satan' undermines its standing among a fractious population where hardliners will be dismayed and opposition figures snort at the hypocrisy.

An American-made F-4 Phantom jet was seen bombing IS positions in Iraq's eastern Diya province a few days ago. Only Iran and Turkey fly these aircraft in this region and Ankara is firmly staying out of the war for now.

The airstrikes were in support of advancing Kurd peshmerga forces. Iran already has training officers and special forces troops from its al Quds brigade embedded with the Kurds who have, albeit unofficially, already benefitted from air support from the US coalition.

So the F-4 reports are credible. It appears they were conducted near Sa'adiya, identified first by Janes defence experts, as part of the biggest push against IS since June.

But they are also dangerous for the international coalition fighting IS. It excludes Iran, which is locked in negotiations with the international community aimed at ending its nuclear weapons programme.

Iran is a major player as a combatant not only against IS but also against all other Sunni rebel groups fighting both IS and the Syrian regime of Bashar al Assad.

Iran is Shi'a dominated. Its military is in the vanguard of its campaign for influence across the wider Middle East. Hezbollah, its Shi'a proxy in the Lebanon is fighting alongside Assad, as are Quds troopers. Assad gets most of his weapons from Tehran.

So when Iran's air force bombs Islamic State it risks reinforcing the view among many Sunnis, including those who hate IS, that the Americans are conspiring with Tehran to enfeeble the Sunni umma (nation).

As the US-led coalition is failing to harness Sunni rebel groups to its air strike campaign in Syria, it looks increasingly to them that the Americans are happy to see them get bombed by Assad (with what are probably Iranian weapons).

This will make it very difficult to successfully turn the Sunni tribes against Islamic Sate – and without them there is no prospect of destroying the death cult that has soaked the region in blood.

Costa Concordia Video 'Shows Captain Leaving'

Video has emerged of the captain of the doomed cruiseliner Costa Concordia preparing to leave the stricken ship, having previously claimed he had tripped into a lifeboat.

The footage was released by prosecutors who have told reporters they are seeking a 20-year prison sentence for Francesco Schettino, who is giving evidence for a second day at his trial.

Schettino was dubbed Captain Coward after he was accused of abandoning the vessel before passengers had escaped.

He had told investigators he had ''tripped and stumbled into a lifeboat'' the night of the disaster.

But in the video, prosecutors say he can be seen in a tie waiting to board an emergency escape craft.

Schettino crashed the Costa Concordia into rocks off the Italian island of Giglio in January 2012 during an attempted "sail past".

The holed vessel grounded and partially capsized in shallow water, forcing 4,200 passengers and crew to flee, with the loss of 32 lives.

Pressed over why he had delayed raising the alarm, Schettino claimed he feared people would jump into the water and wanted to wait until ship was closer to shore.

"On the ship I am number one after God," he said.

During a combative performance under cross-examination for the first time on Tuesday, Schettino denied he had organised the sail past to impress Domnica Cermontan, a Moldavian dancer who was working on the ship and has told the court she was having an affair with the married captain.

Speaking at his trial in Grosseto in Tuscany on Tuesday, Schettino said he had sought to "kill three birds with one stone" by undertaking the sail past.

He was doing a favour to a ship's official and paying tribute to a former cruise captain who lived on the island of Giglio, while making the cruise more attractive to passengers, he claimed.

Schettino is charged with manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning ship.

He is being tried alone after five other defendants reached plea deals.

His trial is expected to continue into next year.

Dewani Murder Trial: Family's Plea To Shrien

We use cookies to give you the best experience. If you do nothing we'll assume that it's ok.

The family of murder victim Anni Dewani have begged her husband Shrien to "tell the world what happened the night she died", as the case appears close to collapse.

At a press conference, Anni's brother Anish Hindocha implored the 34-year-old businessman to take the witness stand and tell his story for the first time.

In a statement, he said: "It would be a terrible development in what has been a four-year wait if we and the people of South Africa are not afforded the full story.

"If they are not given the full facts, and by that I mean Shrien Dewani telling the court his version, then Anni's death will remain on the conscience of South Africa forever."

Anni was shot dead in a suburb of Cape Town in 2010 after the taxi she and her new husband were travelling in was hijacked.

Three men have been convicted over their roles in the killing, which prosecutors say was organised and paid for by Dewani to get out of the marriage.

Iran Denies Airstrikes In Iraq Against IS Targets.

Iran has denied Pentagon claims that it has carried out airstrikes in neighbouring Iraq against Islamic State militants.

A senior official also insisted that cooperation with the US in such attacks was out of the question.

The denial comes after a Pentagon spokesman said Iran had carried out raids in eastern Iraq, but said the US had not coordinated with Tehran over the strikes.

Rear Admiral John Kirby said the US continued to fly missions over Iraq and that it was up to the Iraqi government to avoid conflicts in its own airspace.

He said it was believed to be the first time Iran had launched manned aircraft from inside Iran to strike targets in Iraq.

Iranian military leaders have admitted that dozens of their forces have been in Iraq fighting alongside Kurdish troops battling extremists.

The US has not invited Iran to join the coalition fighting Islamic State and Iran has said it would not join in any case.

Rear Admiral Kirby said: "There's no reason to believe they are not true, those reports that Iranian aircraft struck targets against IS in eastern Iraq.

"It's Iraqi airspace and it's for Iraqis to deconflict.

"We are not coordinating with nor deconflicting with Iranian military."

But a senior Iranian offical said: "Iran has never been involved in any air strikes against the Daesh (Islamic State) targets in Iraq.

"Any cooperation in such strikes with America is also out of question for Iran."

It came as NATO foreign ministers met in Brussels to discuss the threat posed by IS.

US Secretary of State John Kerry said the battle against IS militants would last "as long as it takes to prevail".

Hong Kong Protest Founders To 'Surrender'

The three founders of Hong Kong's Occupy movement say they will "surrender" to police, who they accused of being "out of control".

Occupy Central leader Benny Tai praised the bravery of the pro-demonstrators protesters, but urged them to leave "this dangerous place".

"As we prepare to surrender, we three urge the students to retreat - to put down deep roots in the community and transform the movement," he said.

"Surrendering is not an act of cowardice, it is the courage to act on a promise. To surrender is not to fail, it is a silent denunciation of a heartless government."

The professor said the movement would now take a new direction to promote civil disobedience, including through education and a fresh social charter.

He told a news conference that the trio would hand themselves into police on Wednesday and they were prepared to "face all consequences".
