Skier's Hand Partially Amputated By Plane

A skier's hand was partially amputated when she was hit by a plane making an emergency landing on a busy slope in the Alps.

The Jodel tourism plane with two people on board was forced to land after suffering mechanical problems shortly after take-off.

Emergency workers said it narrowly avoided an even worse catastrophe - just missing a ski lift cable, trees and a group of children before landing on a beginners' blue slope.

The victim, a 55-year-old Polish woman, was hit in the forearm and hand as the aircraft passed her on the piste in the French resort of Avoriaz.

Officials in the area said the woman had her back to the plane, which made hardly any noise as it closed in on her.

Images from the scene show the sheer number of skiers in the area where the plane came to rest, yards from a chairlift, after the accident on Thursday.

According to French daily newspaper Le Parisien, the victim suffered a "traumatic partial amputation" and was treated on the slopes by resort services and a doctor before being airlifted by helicopter to a clinic in Annemasse, near the Swiss border.

The plane's pilot is said to be a professional who is used to the type of flying conditions in the area.
