Mass Protest Over Afghan Woman's Mob Killing

Thousands of Afghans have marched through the capital, Kabul, to protest over the beating to death of a woman falsely accused of burning a Koran.

Many of the 3,000 demonstrators carried banners showing the bloodied face of Farkhunda, a 27-year-old religious scholar who was killed last week.

Some paimted their faces red in trubute to her.

The crowd shouted "Justice for Farkhunda!" and "Death to the killers!"

Farkhunda, who went by just one name, was beaten, run over with a car, burned and then her body was thrown into the Kabul river.

Eighteen people have been arrested and 13 police officers suspended as part of an investigation into her killing, according to police reports.

Protester Waheed Omar said: "We are here to ask for punishment for all those who committed this heinous crime, this tragic tragedy that is unparalleled in the current Afghan history."

The protesters also called for officials and religious leaders who said her killing was justifiable if she had deliberately damaged a Koran.

Women's rights activist Fatana Gilani said she hoped the death could spark change in the country after years of war and corruption.

"We want peace, we want security, we want justice, we want unity," she said.
