Iran Laws Make Women 'Baby-Making Machines'

Amnesty International has attacked proposed new laws in Iran, claiming the rules will turn women into "baby-making machines".

The country's parliament is considering two bills which would restrict birth control and access to jobs for childless women in an effort to boost the population.

Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, a director at Amnesty, says these measures "send a message that women are good for nothing more than being obedient housewives and creating babies".

According to the campaign group, Bill 446 would ban vasectomies and restrict access to contraceptive advice, while Bill 315 would make it harder for women without children to get certain jobs.

The group adds the laws would also breach Iran's international human rights obligations.

Amnesty's report said: "The proposed laws will entrench discriminatory practices and set the rights of women and girls in Iran back by decades.

"The authorities are promoting a dangerous culture in which women are stripped of key rights and viewed as baby-making machines rather than human beings with fundamental rights to make choices about their own bodies and lives."

Last year the country's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called for Iranians to reverse their declining birth rate.

It was a U-turn on a long-standing birth control programme famous for it's slogan "two children is enough".

The UN estimates Iran has a population of 76 million people but the country's leadership now wants to double that figure.

Iran has been criticised in the past for its treatment of women.

British Iranian woman Ghoncheh Ghavami was detained last June by police in Tehran after protesting outside a volleyball match.

She was eventually released on bail in November.
