Crew members have been evacuated from the US section of the International Space Station after a leak of "harmful substances".

They have been relocated to the Russian section of the station, according to Moscow news agencies.

All six crew on board the station - three Russians, two Americans and an Italian - are reported to be safe.

Mission control experts in Moscow and Houston worked together to co-ordinate the swift evacuation.

NASA says there is no confirmation that the leak was ammonia, as previously reported.

The space station is the largest man-made object in orbit, and the first component of the structure was launched in 1998.

It serves as a microgravity and space environment research laboratory, and has been continuously occupied for more than 14 years.

The station is split into two sectors; the Russian segment and the United States segment.
