Israel Resumes Airstrikes As Truce Bid Fails

Israel has resumed airstrikes in the Gaza Strip after Palestinian militants reportedly fired rockets, according to the military.

Two airstrikes took place on Tuesday just six hours after Israel entered an Egypt-proposed truce that was rejected by Palestinian militants.

A military statement said: "Hamas has fired 47 rockets since we suspended our strikes in Gaza. As a result, we have resumed our operation against Hamas."

No injuries have been reported in the attacks.

TV footage showed the Iron Dome anti-missile system intercepting rockets over the port city of Ashdod.

Sirens also sounded in areas as far as 80 miles north of the Gaza Strip.

US Secretary of State John Kerry said: "I cannot condemn strongly enough the actions of Hamas in so brazenly firing rockets, in multiple numbers, in the face of a goodwill effort to secure a ceasefire."

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned the military offensive in Gaza would be expanded if Hamas did not accept the deal.

He said: "If Hamas rejects the Egyptian proposal and the rocket fire from Gaza does not cease - and that appears to be the case now - we are prepared to continue and intensify our operation to protect our people.

"And for this we expect full support from the responsible members of the international community."

But the armed wing of Hamas - the Ezzedine al Qassam Brigades - said the proposals aimed at ending a week of airstrikes and rocket attacks had not been discussed with the group and threatened more violence.

It said: "No official or unofficial side has approached us about the ceasefire talked about in the media ... [but] if the contents of this proposal are true, it is a surrender and we reject it outright.

"Our battle with the enemy will intensify."

Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas, who heads the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority, welcomed the Egyptian initiative and urged both sides to stop fighting.

More than 180 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli airstrikes over the last seven days.

Israel says the bombings raids are designed to stop rocket fire from Gaza. No Israelis have died in the recent attacks, but four have been seriously wounded.

Human rights groups say more than 75% of the Palestinian dead have been non-combatants and the UN agency for Palestinian refugees says more than a quarter of them have been children.

The raids have prompted some 17,000 people to flee their homes, particularly in northern Gaza, with many taking refuge in UN schools.
