President Barack Obama is to meet his beleaguered Veterans Secretary Eric Shinseki in the Oval Office this morning, the White House says.
The 10.15am behind-closed-doors discussion comes as pressure has been building on Mr Shinseki to hand in his resignation over the allegations engulfing the Veterans Affairs agency.
President Obama has said he plans to have a "serious conversation" with Mr Shinseki about his "capacity" to handle the problems in the department, according to US media.
Mr Shinseki said on Friday morning that he would oust the leadership at a government-run Arizona hospital that is at the centre of the waiting list scandal.
His announcement of that decision, at a conference for homeless veterans on Friday morning in Washington DC, is being viewed as a last-ditch effort to save his job.
Prominent lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have demanded he resign over the burgeoning veterans care furore, which has become a political timebomb since it emerged last month.
Up to 1,700 US military veterans were kept off waiting lists amid "significant delays" to their treatment at the Phoenix facility, an interim inspector's report found this week.
It is alleged that as many as 40 patients may have died at the hospital while awaiting care.
The Veterans Affairs (VA) inspector general, which is investigating 26 facilities run by the agency nationwide, said medical-care delays were "systemic throughout".
