Benedict Cumberbatch's turn as WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has made the worst US box office debut of any major film this year.
The Fifth Estate made only $1.7m (£1.05m) in ticket sales in its first weekend, despite opening at 1,769 cinemas.
Co-produced by Steven Spielberg's Dreamworks studio, it received mixed reviews and has been heavily criticised by Assange himself.
The controversial leaks website also tried to upstage the film's Stateside release by making its own documentary available for free.
Mediastan, billed as the "WikiLeaks road movie", claims to give a behind-the-scenes insight into the organisation's leaking of secret US government cables.
In a statement, Assange urged people to avoid "claptrap Hollywood propaganda" and has called the film misleading and inaccurate.
Assange is wanted for questioning in Sweden and is still holed up at the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where he is seeking asylum.
Disney, the distributor of The Fifth Estate, said it was "certainly disappointed" by the film's poor showing and was looking into why it had performed so badly.
It is thought the subject matter of the film has fallen flat with audiences outside of major cities like Los Angeles and New York.
Despite the poor start, Cumberbatch, who enjoyed box office success playing the bad guy in the latest Star Trek movie, is considered one of Hollywood's rising stars.
He also appears in another film released in the US over the weekend, 12 Years A Slave.
That film made a far healthier $50,000 (£30,915) per screen from 19 locations, according to Variety.
