Texas High School Stabbing: Student Charged

A 17-year-old has been charged with murder after a stabbing at a Texas high school that left one student dead and three others wounded.

Luis Alonzo Alfaro pulled a knife during a fight inside the cafeteria on the campus of Spring High School, north of Houston, police said.

The suspect admitted to the stabbing under questioning by detectives, the Sheriff's Department said.

Alfaro, who is expected to appear in court on Friday, is in jail with bail set at $50,000 (£32,000).

One student died at the scene. The other three victims were transported to hospitals, treated and released, police said.

The Texas school has 3,500 students

School district officials cancelled classes at the high school for the rest of the week.

Authorities provided few details on what may have led to the fight, but Sheriff Adrian Garcia said: "There has been some information that this may have been gang-related."

Some parents said the fight was the continuation of a disturbance that broke out a day earlier.

The high school in Spring, which has about has about 3,500 students, was locked down for hours after the incident and little information was released to parents.

Frustrated parents, standing in the sweltering heat across the street from the school, initially learned of the incident through local media reports or through text messages from their children who were inside the school.

Parent Tara Campbell, who received text messages from her daughter about the stabbing, said she intended to have her daughter home-schooled.

"Last year there were gang fights consistently," she said.

"This is ridiculous. This is an ongoing situation."

Superintendent Ralph Draper said the reason for the delay in communicating with parents was that the school district was working with police officials at the time to ensure a smooth investigation.
