A balloonist who was attempting to cross the Atlantic using hundreds of helium-filled balloons has been forced to give up.
Jonathan Trappe lifted off from Caribou, Maine, on Thursday intending to make an Atlantic Ocean crossing with a difference.
About 150 volunteers helped the adventurer fill more than 300 helium balloons, with retired US Air Force officer Joe Kittinger being on hand to wish him well.
Trappe bids a temporary farewell to ground crew and supportersColonel Kittinger once set a record for jumping from a balloon 19.5 miles up, and in 1984 became the first solo balloonist to cross the Atlantic.
Mr Trappe had hoped to be the first person to do it using a cluster balloon system, but was forced to land over Newfoundland in Canada after experiencing technical difficulties.
He was reported safe and well.
The North Carolina native had been working on the transatlantic crossing for two years, having previously crossed the English Channel using a cluster of balloons.
