Boy Killed In Wild Dog Area At Pittsburgh Zoo

A two-year-old has been killed at a zoo in the US after he fell off a railing into an enclosure for wild dogs.

Pittsburgh police said the boy's mother put him on top of the railing at the edge of a viewing deck to see the African painted dogs.

But he lost his balance and fell between 11ft and 14ft into the enclosure, where he was attacked by 11 wild animals.

Visitors to Pittsburgh Zoo immediately alerted staff who responded "within minutes".

Zoo keepers called off the dogs, and seven of them immediately withdrew from the child.

Three other dogs were eventually pulled away but the last animal had to be shot.

Barbara Baker, the president and CEO of the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium, said staff "tried everything" to save the boy.

"They responded immediately when visitors alerted them to the fact that a child was in the yard," she said.

"They responded immediately and were able to get several of the dogs into the backup building."

Police said it was unclear whether the boy died from the fall or from injuries inflicted by the dogs. The authorities have yet to name the youngster or his 34-year-old mother.

The attack happened in a 1.5 acre exhibit called the Painted Dog Bush Camp that is part of a larger open area where elephants, lions and other animals can be seen.

Visitors walk onto a deck that has glass on the sides but is open in front where there is a four foot railing.

In May, some of the dogs crawled under a fence and escaped into a part of the exhibit that is usually closed. The zoo was shut for about an hour as a precaution.

African wild dogs, which are about as big as medium-sized domestic dogs, are also known as cape hunting dogs, spotted dogs, and painted wolves.

They weigh 16kg to 36kg, have large, rounded ears and dark brown circles around their eyes and are considered endangered.

Lieutenant Kevin Kraus, of Pittsburgh police, described the accident as "horrific".

Steve Feldman, a spokesman for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, said no one he had spoken to could recall any deaths of children at an accredited zoo over the last 40 years or more.

Mr Feldman said the Pittsburgh Zoo successfully completed its five-year review in September, which means it meets or exceeds all safety standards.
